Monday 15 August was a very special day for us , as we were surprised to see a SOUTHERN RIGHT Whale close to shore ! With us having 99% of HUMPBACK WHALES ‘ sightings, a SOUTHERN RIGHT is always an extra bonus, as they again mostly get sighted by our Cape Town colleagues. We’ve been used to having our Southern Right visitors in August, the very 1st year we started whale watching the 1st Southern Right was spotted on Joey’s birthday on the 26th, and Danie specially made a point of making her close the office and go out to see with him! The Southern Right whale is the larger of the 2, weighing approximately 20tons’ more than the Humpback Whale and is the one with the large callosities growing on the ‘face’ area of this enormous mammal! They are more ‘placid’ and not so acrobatic as the Humpback Whales. |
